I like to think that my 14 month old eats fairly healthy, but I;m not going to lie and pretend that she doesn't occasionally have a snack or meal that's not 100% nutritious. However, I can't help but shudder as I see toddlers being pushed around in strollers eating a bag of cheetos or chips and a big bottle of Kool-aid! That's nothing but sugar, sodium, and fat, and they're not even walking off the calories! I also don't think its right to deny your little one special treats and snacks like ice cream now and then. Its not gonna kill them. I'm curious to see what your kids (around 10-30 months but it doesn't really matter) eat! Be as brief or long winded as you like. Here's a sample of my 14 month old's menu: Breakfast Sliced bananas with wheat germ Multi grain waffles Canned fruit Multi-grain cheerios, regular cheerios, other cereal A whole apple, peeled Sliced fruit to dip in yogurt Graduates cereal bars Scrambled eggs Lunch or Dinner Baked sweet potato Baked pork chops Mashed potatos Steamed mixed veggies (peas, carrots, corn, butternut squash, green beans, lima beans) Corn tortillas and refried beans Chicken breast, sliced, breaded, and baked (a healthier alternative to chicken nuggets) to dip in ketchup, BBQ, or marinara sauce Wholewheat pasta (chopped spaghetti, or small shapes like penne and wagon wheels to pick up) in sauce with mini meatballs (ground beef or lean ground turkey) Rice and steamed veggies in a cheesy sauce Corn on the cob (lots of fun!) Gerber and Beechnut microwave meals for when you just don't have time Turkey w/ mustard, tuna, Simply JIF Peanut Butter & Jelly, sandwiches on multigrain bread cut into quarters Breadsticks to dip in marinara sauce Avocado Plain oatmeal with a little bit of brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and granola (no raisins, they're a choking hazard) Breaded chicken breast stuffed with mozarella and spinach and baked Slow-cooked pork shoulder, pulled into strips. This is very easy to eat and can be used for so many recipes such as sandwiches or seasoned mexican style on corn tortillas with guacamole. Flank steak roasted in the oven with veggies, potatos, and mushrooms Snacks Fruit to dip in yogurt Kashi TLC multigrain veggie crackers Kashi TLC multigrain cookies or cereal bars Quakers mini rice cakes (cheddar or apple cinnamon flavor) Low fat string cheese Lunchables JR. (comes with crackers, turkey, and mozzarella) Prunes (Be very careful not to eat too many! One a day is enough, but they have wonderful health properties) Instead of ice cream, try frozen yogurt Beverage Rice milk Danimals yogurt drinks Milk, a little nesquick powder, and a banana mixed in a blender (you can also add cheerios!) Orange juice, mixed fruit juice, or Juicy Juice Harvest Surprise fruit juice with carrot juice + 50% water Chamomile tea sweetened with orange juice instead of sugar and watered down (great for bed time!) Peppermint, lemon, and other herbal teas (make sure that they are normal herbs that are safe!) Hopefully we can get ideas and learn from each other! moreResolved Question: making something out of nothing: list of ing?

Kitchen Rain suddenly poured down as I was walked back to my house. I didn’t bring an umbrella with me. Perfect. I zipped up my Nike jacket and ran as fast as I could. I was only a few meters away, and as fate would have it, the heel from my new L.K. Bennett boot broke. And I went crashing down on the pavement with a splash. “Damn, damn, damn!” I muttered. This is really not my day. Luckily, no one was around to witness my fall. That would have been so embarrassing. I collected the rest of my dignity and hobbled back home. As I entered the house, drenched from head to toe, I kicked my stupid boots off and put it in the shoe cupboard. In the living room, I saw my mom watching EastEnders. She’s totally addicted to that show. I bet if the house was on fire, she’d save the DVD of it. I tiptoed noiselessly until I reached my room. I certainly don’t want her questioning me about my appearance. I closed the door shut, unzipped my wet jacket and put it in the laundry bin. I stopped to look at the mirror. Sh*t, I look horrible. My usually straight blond hair was all tangled up. My face was wet, and so were my clothes. I got a towel, wiped my face, and quickly grabbed some clean clothes. I ran to the bathroom and slammed the door. I hurriedly bathed, dressed and combed my hair. Now I look more decent. I went downstairs to let my mom acknowledge my presence. Until now, she’s still glued to the damn tube. “Hi, mom.” I said. Finally, she looked up to see my face. “Hi, honey! You’re home? I didn’t see or hear you come in.” Yes, you didn’t, because your eyes were on the television. One of these days I’m going to disconnect that set and throw it out the window. “How was your walk?” She asked. “Fine. It suddenly rained and I had to run back to the house.” I wasn’t going to tell her about the heel episode. “Oh, did you take a bath? I don’t want you to get sick, hon.” She pressed pause and looked at me with concern. “Yes, I took a bath. I’m fine. Don’t worry about it.” When my mom gets worried about me over the littlest things, it drives me over the edge. I sometimes have to say “I’m fine” about a hundred times. I was about to head for the kitchen for a snack when my mom called me. “Athena, I almost forgot, your dad called to ask if you’re available on Saturday. He wants to take you to that new mall in Riverview.” I stopped short. My relationship with my dad isn’t what you’d call great or close. My parents divorced when I was six. I’d always hear shouts, doors slamming, my mom crying...It was a terrible time. My mom left my dad and took me with her. I grew up understanding these things. My mom’s side is a pretty rich family, so we weren’t the kind who lived from one place to another until we finally settled down. Riches don’t go into my mother’s head, and we live in a big house, but no maids and no pool. My mom was brought up to be disciplined, thank God for that. I love the ordinary upbringing. When you flaunt your riches, guarantee that you’ll get no friends at all. Now, my mom’s pretty cool with dad. She doesn’t like to talk about him, though. Only if it concerns me. “Athena?” My mind snapped back to the present. “Are you available?” She prompted. “No,” I replied. “I have a project to do.” “Okay, then.” Luckily, my mom’s too good so she believes my lies easily. She went back to watching her show. I continued heading for the kitchen to fix myself a snack. I love peanut butter and banana sandwiches, like Elvis. When I really need one and we ran out of peanut butter, bananas, or bread, I sometimes go mad. I even ran 6 blocks to the deli just to buy the necessary ingredients. My mother thinks I’m a lunatic when it comes to PB and banana sandwiches, but I can say the same for her obsession with EastEnders. OR My mother has been the only one who has taught me the real Salvadoran “touch” to every food I can prepare. She has really been my role model in everything in my life, especially in the kitchen because she taught me the way to give food the Salvadoran flavour since I was a little girl. She is still doing this, even now that I’m already an adult. One thing I loved that she taught me to prepare was her special “Pudin de Pan” (Bread Pudding). The ingredients are not hard to find. It only needs bread, margarine, vanilla, eggs, sugar, milk, and a “secret ingredient”. Sadly I cannot list her “secret ingredient”. If I do. It won’t be a special recipe anymore. She mixes all the ingredients and leave them in repose for a while to let it gain a better taste. In a separate bowl, she prepares the caramel with brown sugar. When the caramel is ready, she adds the mix into it. Eventually she puts everything inside the oven and the pudding will be ready around forty five minutes later. Every time she is baking a 'pudin de pan', the aroma would get into every room in the house. You can smell it outside the house as well; that’s why our neighbors can always guess when we are makingthank's for help:) moreResolved Question: What is your favorite "add-on" to a recipe?

check it out: DID YOU KNOW? Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little 'stringy things' off of it. That's how the primates do it. Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster. Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold! Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking. Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking. To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up. For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting. Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic. Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simply chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream. Yummm! Reheat Pizza Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works. Easy Deviled Eggs Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up. Expanding Frosting When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving. Reheating refrigerated bread To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster. Newspaper weeds away Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers, put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and for- get about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers. Broken Glass Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily. No More Mosquitoes Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away. Squirrel Away! To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it. Flexible vacuum To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in nar- row openings. Reducing Static Cling Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and ... ta da! ... static is gone. Measuring Cups Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out. ! Foggy Windshield? Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car . When the window s fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth! Reopening envelope If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily. Conditioner Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair. Goodbye Fruit Flies To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever! Get Rid of Ants Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants They eat it, take it 'home,' can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed! INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS The heating unit went out on my dryer! In my daughters school, we are responsible for bringing the class afternoon snack twice a month. No chips/chocolate/other unhealthy foods and they are peanut restricted as well. They suggest fruits, veggies, crackers, etc. I'm curious if other moms may have some great healthy snack ideas (I love baking and make homemade bread) I was thinking banana and zucchini breads with some kind of strawberry butter or honey butter. Also some tortilla roll ups (they have a fridge for storage in the classroom) Our school does allow homemade items- it does not have to be store bought or sealed in any way. My daughter said a lot of the kids don't eat their snacks because they don't like them, so I'm looking for some recipes that are tried and true with maybe picky eaters. Thanks! moreResolved Question: sugar-free Banana Bread?

DID YOU KNOW? Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little 'stringy things' off of it. That's how the primates do it. Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster. Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold! Yummm! OTHER GOODIES TO KNOW: Reheat Pizza Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. Wet newspapers, put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings. Get Rid of Ants Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,' can't digest it so it kills them. Hi, i am going to be starting school September 2nd, and it is August 7. I want to lose about 15-20 pounds before school starts. Because i am 13 years old, 5'2 and 145 lbs. I know i sound fat, i am, well im chubby . -BUT- I am big boneded, so i will never actually be like really skinny. I have curves, and i want to keep them, but get rid of my belly. It looks like a beer belly, it doesnt stick out or anything. So anyway im going to start a diet tommroow, and excersize an hour a day, I am going to be starting a diet called the cabbage soup diet, however i am not going to eat cabage soup, i am going to replace it with tomato, beef barley, and chicken noodle soup. i got this diet from the website, does it sound healthy? Do you think i will get my results i want in 2 weeks? The 7 Days Cabbage Soup Diet Plan Eat as much soup as you desire for seven days and you can lose 10 to 15 pounds. The recipe varies slightly, but includes a variety of low-calorie vegetables such as cabbage, onions, and tomatoes, flavored with bouillon, onion soup mix, and tomato juice. Each day of the seven-day program has specific foods that must be eaten, including potatoes, fruit juice, many vegetables, and on one day, beef. Day One: Eat only fruit, all the fruit you want except banana. Drink unsweetened tea, black coffee, cranberry juice, and water. Eat as much soup as you like. Day Two: All you want - fresh, raw, or cooked vegetables of your choice. Stay away from dry beans, peas, and sweet corn. Reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter for dinner. Eat as much soup as you like but no fruit for today. Day Three: Combine days one and two, eat as much fruit, vegetables, and soup, as you like but no baked potato. Day Four: Eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you would like on this day, along with your soup. This day is supposed to lessen your desire for sweets. Day Five: You may have 10-20 ounces of beef (300-500g) and a large tin or up to six fresh tomatoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water this day to wash the uric acid from your body. Eat your soup at least once today. You may eat broiled or baked chicken (skinless) instead of beef. If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef. Day Six: Eat beef and vegetables today. You can even have two or three steaks if you like, with fresh vegetables or salad. NO BAKED POTATO. Eat your soup at least once. Day Seven: Eat all you want of brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and vegetables. Be sure to eat your soup at least once to day. No bread, alcohol, or carbonated beverages, not even diet soda. 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup butter 3/4 cup brown sugar 2 eggs, beaten 2 1/3 cups mashed overripe bananas (I put bananas that are ‘turning’ into the freezer until I’m ready to bake with them.) Stir in eggs and mashed bananas until well blended. Stir banana mixture into flour mixture; stir just to moisten. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. 3 Bake in preheated oven for 60 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean. The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the fil- ter after every load clothes.) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material ... I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. Well ... the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free ... that nice fragrance too. You know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box .. well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?! Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I'd share! Note: I went to my dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it ... the water ran right thru the screen! There wasn't any puddling at all! T hat repairman knew what he was talking about! note from Jean----I checked out my dryer screen--I seldom use bounce,-- but water would scarcely go through !! I cleaned it and then the water sailed right through -.imagine that ! ---- PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK. I can't decide what to bake today, a cake or pie, or what kind of cake or pie. I have flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and Dream Whip mix, sweetened and unsweetened cocoa powders, jams, preserves and jellies. My daughter and I can't agree on what to make, so I'm opting for somthing new instead of a quick bread, poundcake, key lime pie, pineapple upside down cake, carrot cake, jello poke cake, chocolate cake, or brownies. It has to use the ingredients I have on hand since I'm not going near a store today. moreResolved Question: In the baking world there are two types of CAKES, the creaming method, & the rubbing method?
I feel slightly offended when I invite my US friends to tea and later they ask for the "bread" recipe that was so tasty. It is not a bread, it is a cake from the 'rubbing in' method, i.e. less fat, and not slathered all over with some disgustingly unhealthy item called "frosting" and usually made for the 'creaming' method cake which has lots of butter, or fat, eggs and sugar. Does anyone out there, who is a baker, or cook know the difference, and why would it be called "BREAD" when it has apple sauce, dates, walnuts, bananas, flour, butter and some sugar, cinnamon, that is not bread, but it is not frostable, thank g-d! I was told at school that there are two methods of 'CAKES', THE RUBBING IN, ie. rubbing the fat into the flour, but when there is much more fat it is 'creamed' with sugar, and then the eggs. An educated response will be much appreciated. Thanks in anticipation. moreResolved Question: What are some recipes I can make with?
